Vietnam traffic rules you should know before coming

Vietnamese transportation might cause you a lot of confusion since it is a mess, especially in the big cities at rush hours. However, do not be panic. Just keep in mind Vietnam traffic rules to save yourself in this country.

These following rules are updated on July 2019.

Besides avoiding the messy situation, it is better for you to know Vietnamese traffic rules. The reason is that traffic rules in Vietnam are quite different from most of the countries in the world. Additionally, the local culture is unique. Thus, the rules are adjusted in order to match the local behavior.

Right side driving – One of the most basic Vietnamese traffic rules

Instead of riding on the left side, you have to do on the right side in Vietnam. It is one of the most basic Vietnam traffic rules that you need to know. Riding on the right side is to difficult. However, when you make a turn, it might confuse you. Additionally, due to the reason for riding on the right side, bigger vehicles go on the left side of smaller ones. Furthermore, the bigger your vehicle is, the more respect you get. Or in total, the bigger vehicles are right of way.

If you ride on the left side, you might be fined from 300,000 VND to 400,000 VND if you are driving a motorbike. If you drive a car, it can be from 800,000 VND to 1,200,000 VND.

Helmets are mandatory

One of the most important Vietnam traffic rules is helmets are mandatory with those who ride motorbike and scooter. No matter how old you are, as long as you are on a motorbike of a scooter, you have to wear a helmet. It is not only for the regulation obedience but also for your safety. Helmets help to reduce the injuries of the human head when being in traffic.

In case you do not wear a helmet or wear but lock in the wrong way, you will be fined. The amount of fine might be flexible from 200,000 VND to 400,000 VND.

Riding any vehicles after drinking alcohol is prohibited

The Vietnam traffic rules regulate the degree of alcohol in the breath or blood when riding any vehicles. The degree of alcohol in breath or blood must not higher than 50 milligrams to a motorbike driver. To a car driver, it is not allowed to have alcohol in breath and blood. When your breath or blood contains alcohol when you drive a car, you might pay for a fine from 2 to 3 million VND.

If it is from 50 to 80 milligrams to 100 milliliters of blood, or higher than 0.25 – 0.4 milligrams to 1 litter of the breath, the fine is from 1 to 2 million VND to a motorbike driver. When you are driving a car, the fine amount is from 7 to 8 million VND.

Drinking alcohol before driving is prohibited in Vietnam.

If it is higher than 80 milligrams to 100 milliliters of blood. Or when 1 litter of your breath contains more than 0.4 milligrams of alcohol, you have to bear a higher fine. The amount of fine is from 3 to 4 million VND to a motorbike driver. To a car driver, it is from 16 to 18 million VND.

When you are in Vietnam traffic, you need to know one of the most basic Vietnam traffic rules about the limitation of people on a motorbike. There are no more than two adults on a motorbike. In case you have kids, you can only add one more kid with those two adults including the driver. If there is no more adult except the driver, it can have two more kids on the back.

The amount of fine when you drive more than 2 adults on a motorbike is 200,000 – 400,000 VND. If there are more than 3 people, the fine amount is from 300,000 – 400,000 VND.

Speed limitation in Vietnam traffic rules

To motorbike, Vietnam traffic rules do not allow the riding speed higher than 40 km/h. To a car, it depends on the area. In the populated area, the speed limit is 60 km/h. In the unpopulated area, it is from 60 to 90 km/h.

The fine amount depends on how you exceed the limit. If you drive faster than the limit from 5 – 10 km/h, you have to pay a fine from 100,000 – 200,000 VND to a motorbike rider. And it is from 600,000 VND to 800,000 VND to a car driver.

If it is from 10 – 20 km/h, the fine amount for motorbike is from 500,000 VND to 1 million VND. And to a car driver, it is from 2 to 3 million VND.

And you have to pay from 3 to 4 million VND if you ride 20 km/h faster than the limit speed of a motorbike. It is from 5 to 6 million VND to a car.
