The etiquettes of a Vietnamese traditional wedding has changed many times. In each period of history, the local tradition has changed due to the countries which colonised Vietnam. It is the result of approaching the new culture so that local people changed to make thing easier.

In the past, the Vietnamese bride wore a “áo mớ ba” which is a traditional costume of Vietnam in that time. It was made from three large pieces of clothes with different colors. For a bride, the main and popular colors are pink, green, blue and yellow. On the wedding day, there are some more accessories for the “áo mớ ba” such as the coat, bell and so on with different colors. It is the wedding costume of a Vietnamese bride in the past. However, due to the reason that there are many countries came to Vietnam to colonise, the culture has changed.
Nowadays, a bride usually wears “áo dài” on the wedding day. She also uses beautiful dresses as the western style for her most important day of the entire life. The most popular that a bride chooses to wear on her wedding day is red and white.
In contrast, a groom wedding costume is much simpler. If the bride wears “áo dài”, the groom must wear it too. In contrast, if the bride wears a modern costume, the groom only has one choice, it is suit.
To a guest, when coming to join a Vietnamese traditional wedding, you should avoid these following colors. They are red, white and light pastel colors. The reason is just simple, you might look alike the bride. The most unique thing is the Vietnamese culture is that you can wear a black costume for a wedding. Since it is not important to the local people that black color brings bad things to the newlywed.
Vietnamese traditional wedding gifts
You should never go to a Vietnamese traditional wedding without any gifts. Furthermore, wedding gifts must have its value. Gifts do not only present for your congratulation to the newlywed but also help them in the wedding party costs.
There are three types of wedding gifts that the Vietnamese usually use. Friends of parents, bride or groom come to the wedding with money envelope. Close friends of the bride and groom might give them a more meaningful gift. Normally, it is jewellery or special gift which is meaningful to a wedding.
Relatives of two families usually give the newlywed golden jewellery. Its meaning is wishing the new couple a wealthy life. Moreover, jewellery also can be a saving asset of them.
The organization or company where the bride and groom are working have a different way to give a wedding gift. It can be a picture, a ticket for a honeymoon or the interior of the house. Normally, it has both material value and spiritual value.
Welcoming guests to a Vietnamese traditional wedding announcement party
In a Vietnamese traditional wedding, the announcement party is when two families announce all of their friends about the wedding. It is usually held in the restaurant or at the groom’s house. There are some etiquettes when welcoming guests during the party.
The bride does not stand at the door to welcome guests. She needs to stay in a private room to make up and prepare for the party. Her friends can go directly to the room to share happiness together as well as give her wedding gifts before the party.
Grooms and parents of two families stand in front of the main door to welcome guests to the wedding party. When the party starts, instead of bride’s father takes her to the hall, a Vietnamese traditional wedding is different. The groom and bride walk to the hall together and follow by their parent.
During the party, bride, groom and their parents also have a table visit etiquette. They go around the hall to cheer with everybody who is attending the wedding party. After the party finish, they all, including the bride, stand at the door to thank guests and take pictures to memorise the day.
